Belgian paedophile Marc Dutroux claimed he was the hapless fall-guy for a shadowy child-sex gang as he gave evidence for the first time in his trial for abduction, rape and murder.
On the third day of Belgium's "trial of the century", Dutroux addressed the court from behind bullet-proof glass to claim that two police officers were part of a sinister gang that kidnapped and raped girls to order.
He betrayed little emotion as he recounted his role in the horrifying series of events that led to the discoveries of the bodies of four girls, and the rescue of two others, in the summer of 1996.
He lost his composure only once when asked by the presiding judge, Stephane Goux, to sum up how he felt about those events.
"I made mistakes, I even committed some crimes. If we could go back to before... but we can't," the jobless electrician said.
Dutroux denied involvement in the kidnappings in June 1995 of two eight-year-old girls, Julie Lejeune and Melissa Russo, but admitted taking part in the abductions two months later of An Marchal, 17, and Eefje Lambrecks, 19.
The bodies of the four girls were found buried in the gardens of properties belonging to Dutroux in August 1996. They had all been raped and beaten.
Another two girls aged 12 and 14 were rescued from a secret cellar ....
