SOLOMON’S TEMPLE: Ezekiel claims: Build my Temple if you want SHEKINAH to Return

By Michael S. Young

The Hebrews, Egyptians, Babylonians and the residents of Mesopotamia used a measurement called a cubit. One royal Hebrew cubit is about equal to 20.76 inches which is about 52.7 cm. Scholars of the cubit measurements of Solomon’s Temple found in the Bible know for the past few thousand years no one has been able to get all the cubits of the Bible to fit correctly. Until now …….This means a correct model of Solomon’s Temple has never existed even though all of the clues are recorded in the Bible.

The big question is; Can the cubits of Ezekiel correctly dovetail into the cubits of I Kings and II Chronicles? This difficult puzzle of correctly placing the cubits so that all fit has been an extremely complex mystery. This model of Solomon’s Temple uses every verse found in I Kings, II Chronicles and Ezekiel which apply to the 500 x 500 cubit square Temple Mount area. It is the opinion of this patent owner that Ezekiel contains the remaining measurements of Solomon’s Temple.

Many temple scholars think Solomon’s Temple was only 30 cubits high. The 30 cubits or 52′ height was an inside measurement of the ceiling. The Temple that King Solomon built was actually 120 cubits tall as shown here (II Chronicles 3:4). Architects and builders might scoff that no one could build a 20 story tall building 3,000 years ago. But the Bible states that it did occur and so do a few other ancient historians.

The Temple of Solomon is shown here in a modern downtown setting of Jerusalem where it originally stood on the Temple Mount. Some temple scholars over look the fact that the main Tower in Solomon’s Temple had two sets of winding staircases. So this brings forth a dilemma. Could Solomon’s Temple have been vertical instead of horizontal? If it is horizontal as most believe where do the two sets of winding staircases fit?

According to the prophet Ezekiel, the First Temple as built by King Solomon will someday be rebuilt. The style used here for rendering purposes uses the pylon design which fits in with the original Phoenician and Egyptian era.

The gates & main Temple structure might have had straight walls rather than pylon shaped walls. For this particular architectural rendering the older Egyptian and Mesopotamian style was used rather than straight walls of later temples. Many of the gigantic buildings and gates built in the middle east prior to the Greek & Persian Empire’s were built with sloping walls inward such as the ziggurat towers, pyramids, Egyptian temples and most probably Phoenician temples were probably designed after their contemporary temples and buildings. The blueprints of the Temple were drafted by King David. The Temple door faced East. However the inside Temple entrances were from the south. So that the priests first entered into the lower chamber from east to west and then ascended into the upper chambers from the south.

The Temple was engineered by a Phoenician King Hiram who sent a mason who was half Hebrew and half Phoenician to execute the principal works of the interior including casting, masonry, arch stone angles and the logistics of raising the arch stones 20 stories in the sky. The mason’s name was also Hiram.

Along the Eastern Wall of the Temple Mount near the Northern end of the wall there is an underlying layer of pre-Herodian stone which displays a corner of a very old wall protruding out. Archeologist Leen Ritmeyer has called this unique corner spot the “offset”. It is clearly an older protrusion of an existing wall and corner upon which King Herod had his masons built a new wall. Could this “offset” have been the original NE corner of the outer courtyard of Solomon’s Temple?

The original outer courtyard of Solomon’s Temple measured 500 cubits square as is documented by the exhiles in the Mishna. The Jewish exhiles who were freed by the Persians returned to Israel to rebuild a Second Temple. When the exhiles returned they measured the outer courtyard as being 500 cubits square. They did not build the outer courtyard the 500 cubit square was the remains of the First Temple. This fact dovetails with Ezekiel’s measurements as being Solomon’s Temple each had a 500 square outer courtyard. So this means that the original Temple had a courtyard of such dimensions. The only contemporary scholar who recorded that was Ezekiel.

In this picture the Northeast corner of the outer courtyard of Solomon’s Temple is placed at the “offset”. The results of this is, the Rock (which is in the Dome of the Rock Mosque) fits smack dab in the center of the Main Temple of the model. Using any other location North or South on the Eastern Wall the Rock under the Mosque does not fit in the Main Hall of the Temple where it probably once sat. So possibly this “offset” might have served as the original NE corner of Solomon’s Temple

There seems to be a group of Temple rebuilders that insist on rebuilding the Second Temple. That seems beyond strange?

Why would anyone put time and energy into a model to rebuild the Second Temple when No Shekinah ever descended over it?

Ezekiel the amazing prophet who foretold what the next temple measurements would be said this,

“Then did the cherubims lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory (SHEKINAH) of the God of Israel was over them above. And the glory (SHEKINAH) of the LORD went up from the middle of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city. Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.”

Ezekiel is saying to his own people NO SHEKINAH will ever appear over any temple that does not include his measurements. Hence for 500 years NO SHEKINAH ever appeared over the Second Temple. (Targ. to Hag. i. 8; Yer. Ta’an. 65a, and parallel passages).

If there is no guarentee of Shekinah to come down to show GOD’s stamp of approval on the House of the Lord why is anyone motivated to rebuild the Second Temple which for 500 years no Shekinah ever appeared?

Why any rabbi, teacher or student of the Torah would even consider this as an option is a true mystery.

To see the model of Solomon’s Temple in living color check out the link below it transfers you to the Temple part of this website. Solomon’s Temple and the Tent of the Wilderness are the only buildings that the Shekinah of God has manifested himself. A miniture Shekinah stood as a pillar of fire at night during the period of the Exodus of the Jews out of Egypt.

In the Encyclopedia Judaica the “Shekinah” is defined as “the Divine Presence, the numinous immanence of God in the world, …a revelation of the holy in the midst of the profane….” (Volume 14, pp. 1349-1351).

The Encyclopedia goes on to say —

One of the more prominent images associated with the Shekinah is that of light. Thus on the verse, “…the earth did shine with His glory” (Ezekiel 43:2), the rabbis remark, “This is the face of the Shekinah” (Avot diRabbi Natan [18b-19a]; see also Chullin 59b-60a). Both the angels in heaven and the righteous in olam ha-ba (“the world to come”) are SUSTAINED BY THE RADIANCE OF THE SHEKINAH (Exodus Rabbah 32:4, B’rakhot 17a; cf. Exodus 34:29-35)….

According to Saadiah Gaon [882-942 C.E.], the Shekinah is identical with kevod ha- Shem (the glory of God”). He suggests that the “glory of God” is the Biblical term, and Shekinah the Talmudic term for the created splendor of light which ACTS AS AN INTERMEDIARY BETWEEN GOD AND MAN, and which sometimes TAKES ON HUMAN FORM. Thus when Moses asked to see the glory of God, HE WAS SHOWN THE SHEKHINAH, and when the prophets in their visions saw God in HUMAN LIKE- NESS, what they actually saw WAS NOT GOD HIMSELF BUT THE SHEKHINAH (see Saadiah’s interpretation of Ezekiel 1:26, I Kings 22:19, and Daniel 7:9 in Book of Beliefs and Opinions 2:10).

Isaiah the Prophet had this to say about Shekinah;

Oh that you (Lord God) would rend the heavens, that you would come down (to earth), that the mountains might flow down at your (SHEKINHAH) presence. As when the melting fire burns, the fire causes the waters to boil, to make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at your (SHEKINAH) presence!

When you didst terrible things which we looked not for, you came down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence. For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither has the eye seen, O God, beside you, what you have prepared for him that waits for you. Isaiah 64:1-4

Later, when the construction of the Temple was finished and the day of dedication was at hand, the holy “Shekinah” manifested itself in a very physical way —

The Shekinah cloud descended from the sky and knighted the Temple of Solomon. Here are the actual words of Solomon recorded around 950 BC written by the historic King Solomon:

And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the (SHEKINAH) cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the (SHEKINAH) cloud: for the (SHEKINAH) glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

Then spoke King Solomon, “The LORD said that he would dwell in the thick darkness. I have built you (LORD GOD) an house to dwell in, a settled place for you to abide in for ever.

Inside the Temple courtyard, the king turned his face about, and blessed all the congregation of Israel: (and all the congregation of Israel stood;)

And King Solomon said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which spoke with his mouth unto David my father, and has with his hand fulfilled it, saying,

Since the day that I brought forth my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build an house, that my name might be therein; but I chose David to be over my people Israel.

And it was in the heart of King David my father to build an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.

And the LORD said unto David my father, Whereas it was in your heart to build an house unto my name, you did well that it was in your heart. Nevertheless you shall not build the house; but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house unto my name.

And the LORD has performed his word that he spoke, and I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.

And I have set there a place for the ark of the covenant, where in is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt (On Mt. Sinai)

This part of the ceremony is occuring iside Solomon’s Temple inside the upper courtyard… He is looking directly WEST …

And Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven: And he said,

“LORD God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keeps covenant and mercy with your servants that walk before you with all their heart: Who have kept with your servant David my father that you promised him: You spoke also with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is this day.

Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father that you promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that your children take heed to their way, that they walk before me as you fave walked before me.

And now, O God of Israel, let your word, I pray you, be verified, which you spoke unto your servant David my father.

But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built? Yet have you respect unto the prayer of your servant, and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to listen unto the cry and to the prayer, which your servant prays before you to day: That your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou have said, My name shall be there: that you may listen unto the prayer which your servant shall make toward this place.

And listen to the supplication of your servant, and of your people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and when you hear forgive. If any man trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and the oath come before the altar in this house:

Then hear us from heaven, and do, and judge your servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness. When your people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against you, and shall turn again to you, and confess your name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house: Then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which you gave unto their fathers.

When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when you afflict them: Then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that you teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which you have given to your people for an inheritance.

If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be; What prayer and requests be made by any man, or by all your people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:

Then hear from heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou know; (for you, even you only, know the hearts of all the children of men;)

That they may fear you all the days that they live in the land which you gave unto our fathers.

Moreover concerning a stranger(Non-Jew by birth), that is not of your people Israel, but comes out of a far country for your name’s sake;

(For they “non-Jews” shall hear of your great name, and of your strong hand, and of your stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house; Hear from heaven your dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calls to you for: that all people of the earth may know your name, to fear thee, as do your people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I King Solomon have built, is called by your name.

If your people go out to battle against their enemy, where ever you shall send them, and shall pray unto the LORD toward this city (Jerusalem) which you have chosen, and toward the house that I have built for your name: Then hear from heaven their prayer request, and maintain their cause.

If they sin against you, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and you be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near; Yet if they shall find them selves in the land where they were carried as captives, and repent, and make prayers unto you in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;

And so return unto you with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which you gave unto their fathers, the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name:

And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven. I Kings 8:19-54

Now when King Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the (SHEKINAH) glory of the LORD filled the house.

And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the (SHEKINAH) glory of the LORD had filled the LORD’S house.

And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the (SHEKINAH) glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD. And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of 22,000 oxen, and 120,000 sheep: so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.

II Chronicles 7:1-5

In private letters between Prof. Asher Kaufman of Hebrew University, Institute of Physics and myself he says, “Mr. Young you have asked good, but difficult questions” … I much appreciate your support for the exact location of the Temple versus the rivals. This is very important indeed. Regarding the statement that Shekhinah departed from the Temple and returned to its place (eg. Midrash ‘Ekhah Rabbah, Proem 25) So it seems that the terms Holy Spirit and Shekhinah are one and the same. However on the other hand, these statements are countered by the following. “This is Mt. Moriah where the Shekhinah exists for ever ….” (eg. Midrash Haggadol, Genesis 28:16) “Rabbi Aha Says: The Shekhinah never departs from the Western Wall of the Temple. (eg. Midrash Exodus Rabbah 2,2). The Western Wall (not the wailing wall) of the Temple was reputed not to have been destroyed (Midrash Songs of Songs Rabbah). And actually this accounts with my interpretation of the archeology of the site. ” end of quote

My actual position of the historical Temple location is this. I am not certain of its true location. I have used the traditional Temple Mount location for model rendition purposes only. My model of Solomon’s Temple is superimposed on the Temple Mount as viewed from the Mt. of Olives looking west.

One fact is cyrstal clear both the Mishna and Ezekiel claim Solomon’s Temple was in fact 500×500 cubits square that is an established FACT.

As far as what it looked like I am very certain. Every cubit measurement fits (Even though I still consider my margin of error rate of 2-3% of the 400 measurements taken from the scriptures)

It is the authors opinion that any rebuilding of the Second Temple will not include the Shekinah. Ezekiel claims the next Temple to be built will be his because they match Daniel’s numbers of the Dedication date of the next Temple that he prophesied about.

The old men of Ezra claim the same thing they mourned that they had to build a temple that was only 10 stories tall. They desired at that time to rebuild the 20 story Temple of Solomon. Why would rabbis 2,000 years later desire to rebuild the Second Temple that the Hebrews of Ezra mourned of great sorrow because of its deficient height.

In the years ahead we shall see who is right those rabbis currently promoting the rebuilding of the Second Temple or the prophets.

God has staked his claim on the prophetic history of the world in which we now live. Ezekiel makes the claim Lord God of Abraham will be making a grand Shekinah appearance in modern Jerusalem. Daniel gives the exact date when it will occur. As a matter of fact they wrote it down and its in the Bible.

Furthermore Daniel claims God will make his grand appearance in Jerusalem exactly as he did on Mt. Sinai. It will be glorious, spectacular and undeniably GOD MANIFESTING HIMSELF ON EARTH TO MANKIND.
