With the safe passage of the year 2000, prophesized by many to be the beginning of the Great Tribulation, many religious people breathed a sigh of relief, and returned to their care-free, sinful lives. Those who had saved up supplies and provisions in preparation for the predicted catastrophe tore into them almost as soon as Dec. 31, 1999 had passed.

After all, there seemed to be no need for them. The Western world was at peace, the economy was great, and all of the computers which supported that economy were working perfectly. Many derided those who had expected a Doomsday scenario, those superstitious, radical “fundamentalists” who foolishly awaited the rise of the Anti-Christ, and his defeat by the Second Coming of Christ. Some even haughtily proclaimed a New Age of peace and prosperity, a time of Goddess-worship, free love, and the copious use of various “essential oils.” .......
